A Scientific Look at Popular Teaching Myths When justifying our teaching decisions with intuition and mainstream ELT ideas rather than evidence, we may actually be using strategies that, at best, don't help learning and, at worst, may be detrimental to learning. ARE THESE STATEMENTS TRUTHS OR MYTHS? 1. Adapting activities to take account of LEARNING STYLES and MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES improves learning. 2. The prefixes "neuro-" or "brain-" give scientific validation to effective techniques. 3. DISCOVERY learning negatively affects learning, but DIRECT teaching is more effective. 4. Guessing meaning from the context is not effective. 5. Using dictionaries is a better use of class time. 6. SKIMMING and SCANNING reading tasks do not improve L2 readers' ability to read.
