🔥Dear students! To keep up your English speaking habits and to galvanize your interest in fostering your communication ability, the MSLU Сenter of the English Language and Culture suggests that the students come forward with their own ideas concerning the themes for discussion. British and US history and literature offer an immense variety of subjects for discussion. It is entirely to the students’ inclinations that the topics for discussion will be selected. Please come out with your suggestions. The next meeting after 27 May is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3 at 6 p.m. For instance, we may discuss Somerset Maugham’s short story “The Luncheon”. The following questions will facilitate the comprehension and discussion of the short story: 1. The setting of the story. 2. The financial status of the narrator at the time. 3. The insatiable appetite of the lady and the sentiments of the narrator as the luncheon proceeded. 4. The names of the dishes served at the time. Are some or all of them accessible at the present time? 5. Generally, a luncheon is viewed as a social event with some acute topics discussed in its course. Was the luncheon described in the short story similar to any sort of social event? 6. How was the lady punished for her voracious inclinations? 7. Do you think the author felt vindicated at the sight of his former guest? 8. Why does the author use the word “luncheon” but not “lunch”? 9. What is the humor of the story? All those who are willing to join the workshop, please contact Tata2535@gmail.com, so that they could be provided with the link.
