The pool before the pool.
The pool before the pool. This month our Cinema Pass took us to A Bigger Splash with Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes on a sun-baked island, four people and one very dangerous swimming pool. What most viewers don't realise: it's a remake. The original is La Piscine - "The Swimming Pool" - a 1969 French film by Jacques Deray, set on the Côte d'Azur, with Alain Delon, Romy Schneider and a very young Jane Birkin. Same story of lovers, exes and jealousy. Where the remake is loud and sunburnt, the original is cool, still, almost silent. One more secret hiding in the title. A Bigger Splash is named after a 1967 David Hockney painting of an empty Californian pool, mid-splash, nobody in sight. A pool, it seems, is never just a pool. If you loved the heat and the unease of A Bigger Splash, watch La Piscine - and see how much menace can live in perfect stillness. The ideal watch for a Riviera Retro summer. 🏊
