The drink that ‘converted’ the Pope to its faith ☕ Coffee reached the Ottoman Empire from Egypt and Yemen in the 16th century, then it reached Europe. As the drink came from Muslim lands, some part of the clergy called it an invention of Satan. According to legend, priests asked Pope Clement VIII to ban it, but the Pope tasted it and remarked that it would be a pity to leave such a fine drink to the infidels, joking that it should be baptised. Historians disagree about whether it really happened, but coffee did in the end become a thoroughly European drink.
