Researchers at MarSU have discovered that potassium ions, which are present in large amounts in the body, can multiply the harmful effect of one of the bile acids on liver cells. The results of the work have been published in the journal "Biological Membranes." 🔬 When bile outflow is impaired (a condition called cholestasis), bile acids accumulate in the liver and begin to damage its cells from within, especially the "energy stations" – the mitochondria. It was previously believed that the acids act mildly, but it turned out that everything depends on the environment. If potassium is absent, the damage is reversible. But as soon as even a small amount of potassium appears, the picture changes dramatically: the acids begin to literally tear apart the mitochondrial membranes, the cell loses energy and breaks down. The scientists suggest that in the presence of potassium, bile acid molecules aggregate into complexes that behave like aggressive detergents – they simply pierce the protective membranes of cellular organelles. This discovery provides a new explanation for why the liver suffers so severely during bile stasis and gives researchers a target for creating drugs that could protect mitochondria from such destructive action.
