I have found a pie chart with some results of a relevant survey conducted among Zetlanders, and now I am going to analyse the data and express my opinion. According to the pie chart, the most common response to the survey question "Why should people study literature?" is "To widen horizons" with 38% of the respondents. 18% of those surveyed opt for the response "To learn about the past". The option "To discuss books with friends" is chosen by 10% of those asked. It is also clear from the pie chart that the figure for the response “To escape from daily routine” (22%) is higher than that for “To understand human nature” (12%). It is not surprising because most people read for pleasure and relaxation, especially after a tiring day. The entertainment aspect of reading is more attractive for most people than deep thinking or analysing human behaviour. Unfortunately, one of the problems that one can face studying literature is that it is hard to understand the language of authors who lived decades ago and spoke completely differently. To solve this problem, one can buy an annotated book containing some commentaries that help to understand the original text. In conclusion, I think that studying literature is extremely important as it enables one to think critically and understand the world around better.
