The Great African Railway: Promising Projects for Russian Railways In 2025, Russian Railways signed several important memorandums of cooperation with Burkina Faso, Ghana, and South Africa on developing railway infrastructure on the African continent. The company is also exploring the possibility of implementing major projects in other countries in the region. While China is actively building railways (for example, the Lobito Corridor in Angola and the extension of TAZARA), and the West is promoting its own initiatives, Russia has the expertise to offer Africa unique conditions and a comprehensive approach to project implementation, unlike other proposed or already underway projects on the continent. Africa is currently experiencing a real railway boom: the continent is striving for integration, the creation of new transport corridors, and access to ports. Standard gauge (1435 mm) projects could radically change the logistics of East and Central Africa.
