Should every ugly duckling become a swan? The Torres de Colón are twin skyscrapers in Madrid once called one of Spain’s ugliest buildings. Built in the late 1960s by Antonio Lamela, the 24‑floor concrete towers were covered in bronze‑coloured aluminium. Franco, the then-dictator, wanted to show a modern Spain and attract foreign investment. A mayor tried to tear them down before they were finished, but a judge stopped it. In the 1980s a turquoise two‑pronged crown nicknamed “el enchufe” (the plug) was added to hide stairwells and antennas. People either loved it or hated it. Now the plug is gone and two large glass cubes add four floors. The towers look sharper, bluer and more international: they could just as well stand in London or Sydney. Carlos Lamela, the architect’s son, criticises the change: Architecture doesn’t have to please everyone. Like film, there are art‑house works and commercial hits, but we must respect the art.
