Summer on the Riviera is barely a hundred years old. Until the 1920s, the French Riviera closed for the summer. Grand hotels shut their doors in May. The season was winter; the sun was something to hide from. Then Gerald and Sara Murphy, two rich, charming Americans, asked a hotel in Antibes to stay open. They raked a small beach clear of seaweed. They swam, sunbathed, and partied with their friends: painters Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger, American writers John Dos Passos and Ernest Hemingway, but also French authors Jean Cocteau and Raymond Radiguet, composer Igor Stravinsky and ballet impresario Serge de Diaghilev. One of those friends was Scott Fitzgerald. He watched them closely, and turned them into a novel: Tender Is the Night.
