In Mexico you may receive your own epitaph while you are still alive. π In the days before DΓa de Muertos (Day of the Dead), friends, colleagues and newspapers write calaveras literarias, short mock epitaphs that imagine death coming for politicians, celebrities and one another, always with a smile. The tradition grew in 19th century newspapers as a way to poke fun at the powerful. The word calavera simply means skull. Houses have sugar skulls on the family altar, decorated and marked with the name of the people remembered.Β Thereβs a popular saying in Mexico: Todos somos calaveras, we are all skeletons. This autumn we enjoyed the exhibition of Mexican folk art at our partner, the TraDart Museum of Traditional Art of the Peoples of the World: more than 400 objects from over twenty regions, from the RarΓ‘muri to the Maya.Β DΓa de Muertos falls on 1 and 2 November, so this seemed the right moment to pass on the story.
