Summer Greetings from India from Karthik Pinagadi, a 4th‑year student at the International Faculty of General Practice: 🗣️ “These summer holidays gave me invaluable experience that has largely shaped my understanding of medicine, and especially of surgery. During the holidays, I had an incredible opportunity to observe the work of experienced surgeons — Dr. Vinay (anesthesiologist) and Dr. Abhilash (general surgeon) — at a local multidisciplinary hospital in Pithapuram, India. The first day was a whirlwind of emotions—excitement mixed with a hint of nervousness. As I donned my scrubs and stepped into the sterile environment of the operating room, I was immediately struck by the precision and focus required in this field. 🔹 My first surgery to observe was an Lower Segment Cesarean section (delivery). Name of the surgeon Dr. Srilatha (Gynecologist). Watching the surgical team work seamlessly together was awe-inspiring. Each member had a specific role, and their communication was key to the success of the procedure. I marveled at the surgeon's steady hands as they made the incision and navigated through layers of tissue. The entire process was a blend of science and artistry, and I found myself completely engrossed in the procedure. 🔹 Throughout the summer, I observed various surgeries, including laparoscopic procedures, orthopedic surgeries, and even a few emergency cases. Each experience provided me with a deeper understanding of human anatomy and the complexities involved in surgical interventions. I learned about the importance of pre-operative assessments, sterile techniques, and post-operative care. 🔹 Hands-On Experience The highlight of my summer was when I was given the chance to participate in a few minor procedures under close supervision. Assisting in suturing during a skin graft procedure was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. The adrenaline rush I felt while handling surgical instruments was unlike anything I had experienced before. It reinforced my desire to pursue a career in surgery. 🙏 I also had the chance to interact with patients pre- and post-surgery. Hearing their stories and understanding their concerns helped me develop my communication skills. It was a reminder that behind every surgery is a person with hopes and fears, and it is our duty as future physicians to provide compassionate care. As my summer holidays came to an end, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my medical journey. The experiences I gained during this time solidified my interest in surgery and taught me the importance of teamwork, empathy, and continuous learning in the medical field.
