There are no strangers’ children: NSMU students heard the truth about Beslan from the lips of a fighter who rescued the hostages. Today, on the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism, students of the Northern State Medical University joined the lecture “Beslan. School No. 1”, held as part of the “Knowledge. Safety” project. The event was organised by the Russian Society “Znanie” and the Coordination Centre for Countering Terrorism and Preventing Extremism. 🔹 NSMU students attended the meeting online. The audience was addressed by Akakiy Artushovich Valiev — a career officer with an extensive service record and numerous awards, a veteran of combat operations, a participant in the operation to free the hostages at Beslan School No. 1 in 2004, and a veteran of the SVO. Akakiy Artushovich was at the epicentre of the tragedy that unfolded on 1–3 September 2004. In his speech, he spoke about the events of those days, the work of the special forces units, and how the evacuation of the hostages was carried out. 🔹 The students heard first‑hand accounts of the tragedy — stories full of pain and courage. Akakiy Artushovich shared his personal memories of the agonising minutes of waiting, the decisive moments of the assault, and how the fighters shielded the wounded children with their own bodies, sacrificing their lives. Particularly resonant were Akakiy Artushovich’s words addressed to the youth: “There are no strangers’ children, no matter what nationality or religion they belong to; they are all our children, and this is our shared, deeply felt pain”. For the future doctors, this meeting went far beyond a mere historical account: it became a profound discussion about the most important thing — the value of human life. The lecture reminded everyone how vital unity, mutual respect, and the willingness to support one another are when the world faces tragedy.
