📚 Friday greetings to all book lovers! A good book is like a cup of hot tea: it warms you up, brings people together, and gives you something to talk about. In our “Book Compass” column, we explore all sorts of stories — some are meant to be read aloud and discussed over dinner, while others you might want to keep to yourself, just for your own enjoyment. Today, the “Book Compass” is in the hands of Alexey Genrikhovich Kalinin, Professor at the Department of Public Health, Healthcare, Social Work, and Emergency Medicine: 🗣 “One of the most captivating books I’ve read recently is Hans Rosling’s Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World — and Why Things Are Better Than You Think. The author aims to give readers from all educational backgrounds an effective tool for thinking and combating news‑induced panic. Using verified statistics and vivid examples, he illustrates the mental traps we tend to fall into. Hans Rosling explains in an accessible and original way how things really stand today with poverty and disease, birth and death rates, the conservation of rare animal species, and global climate change. As the author himself wrote: ‘This book is about the world, and it teaches you to understand it. This book is my final battle against widespread ignorance — a cause I’ve dedicated my life to. It’s my last attempt to leave my mark on the world: to change the way people think, to temper their irrational fears, and to redirect their energy into constructive channels.’ And he truly succeeds in doing so! Hans Rosling was a Swedish doctor, professor of international health, statistician, and data populariser. As an expert on global health issues, he was repeatedly included in the list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The well‑known philanthropist Bill Gates said: "One of the most important books I’ve ever read, and an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world".
