The issue of traffic congestion and pollution has become a major concern in modern society. While some people believe that investing in public transport will solve the problem, others contend that building more roads will serve everyone best. Personally, I firmly believe that fundings for public transport are essential for solving the problem. This essay will discuss both views and provide my opinion. Firstly, those who advocate the first point of view contend that allocating more money to public transport is beneficial. Not only will it address the problem of traffic jams, but it will also decrease the amount of air pollution. This is because by choosing to commute by buses and other public vehicles individuals will decrease the number of cars on roads. Consequently, the amount of harmful emissions will be declined. For instance, a new policy was implemented in Angarsk in 2022, which required the government to invest in public transport much more than in the past. As a result, the quality of air became much better and the number of traffic jams also dropped. While it's undeniable that investing in public transport has many advantages, this perspective overlooks the option of building more roads, which carries greater weight in the current context of cities' development. Providing more roads will allow people to reach a destination faster, and it will also reduce traffic congestion. However, a huge number of cars will harmfully affect the environment and this option is not appropriate for people on low income who cannot afford to buy a vehicle. This stance is substantiated by empirical findings: studies demonstrate that building more roads in Irkutsk stimulated the environmental degradation, primarily due to gases emitted. This point of view will irreversibly lead to adverse outcomes. In conclusion, I support the stance on investing in public transport, because this perspective has a whole lot of benefits. While the another option also represents some benefits, the drawbacks overweigh them.
