😴 Snoring is not just a noise, but a social problem. Many people are accustomed to consider snoring an annoying household nuisance. However, this acoustic phenomenon hides a serious threat to health. A new review published in the journal Human Ecology analyzes modern approaches to the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). Snoring is not just an inconvenience to others. This is one of the key symptoms of OSA, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. According to research, OSA is directly associated with the development of hypertension, arrhythmia and other cardiovascular diseases. In fact, this is a public health problem: sleep disorders increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In Russia, about 43% of adults snore, and men are 1.5 times more likely than women. At the same time, most people do not even suspect that their nighttime snoring is a sign of a dangerous syndrome. How are snoring and sleep apnea treated? The gold standard is considered to be CPAP therapy — a device that supplies air under pressure. But there is an alternative — intraoral devices that extend the lower jaw (UHF). These are individually made mouth guards that the patient puts on during sleep. They move the lower jaw forward, widening the lumen of the airways and preventing them from falling off. The effectiveness of the method has been confirmed by many studies: for example, one of them showed that 76.5% of patients were helped by UHF. UHF is recommended for: 🔹Uncomplicated snoring 🔹 Mild to moderate OSA 🔹Intolerance to CPAP therapy It is important that the devices are manufactured individually, and modern digital technologies make them as convenient as possible. And what about Russia? UHF has not yet been widely used in domestic practice. The authors of the review consider this area to be promising and call for an interdisciplinary approach involving dentists and somnologists. Timely diagnosis of snoring and OSA is not only about comfortable sleep. This is the prevention of cardiovascular accidents, improving performance and even reducing the risk of accidents due to falling asleep at the wheel. The treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders can directly affect the quality and duration of life. Link to the article: https://hum-ecol.ru/1728-0869/article/view/701963
