The XVI Regional Scientific and Practical Conference of Ophthalmologists “New Horizons in Ophthalmology” was held at the Northern State Medical University (NSMU). The large‑scale event was organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arkhangelsk Regional Ophthalmological Hospital. 🔹 The conference brought together doctors and healthcare professionals from numerous regions of Russia and abroad. Among the speakers and attendees were specialists from the Arkhangelsk Region, the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO), Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Khabarovsk, Penza, Cheboksary, Vologda, Kaliningrad, Orenburg, Tomsk, Tyumen, as well as from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. 🔹 The opening ceremony in the university’s assembly hall was welcomed by Igor Vasilievich Skubenko, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region. He congratulated the management and staff of the Ophthalmological Hospital and emphasised the value of the practical atmosphere of the event, which was being held in the format of a conference. 🔹 Dmitry Vasilievich Bogdanov, Head of the Regional Ministry of Health, also addressed the participants with congratulations: “Ophthalmologists in the Arkhangelsk Region have always been at the forefront, providing patient care at the cutting edge of scientific thought and modern technology. Both in the past and now, you continue to perform the most advanced and exciting surgeries and successfully address vision‑related issues.” 🔹 Nadezhda Alexandrovna Bylova, Acting Rector of NSMU, delivered welcoming remarks and congratulations to the audience. She highlighted the high significance of the mission of ophthalmologists and the breadth of their knowledge and competencies: “You are experts in diagnosing and treating diseases of the most important sensory organs in the human body. You excel in both therapy and surgery, and in a wide range of medical fields; you have a solid understanding of chemistry and physics. The technologies you use today are nothing short of a dream! Wishing you health, growth, success, and good luck! The Northern State Medical University will continue to train new professionals to join your ranks. I am sincerely glad that this anniversary is being celebrated within the walls of our university”. Following the opening ceremony, the conference continued with thematic sessions on adult and paediatric ophthalmology. Participants discussed pressing issues in therapeutic ophthalmology, surgery, neuro‑ophthalmology, ophthalmic complications of diabetes mellitus, legal and ethical aspects of medical practice, as well as the experience and specific duties of ophthalmic nurses and other important topics.
