"Humanity through Unity": GlobUs expert discusses the philosophy of Ubuntu at the World Social Summit in Addis Ababa On July 29-30, Addis Ababa hosted the first World Social Summit, "New World: Africa in Shaping a Common Future." Professor Gnaka Lagoke, a member of the GlobUs international expert club, Doctor of History, and Professor of Pan-African Studies at Lincoln University (USA), was one of the speakers at the summit. Lagoke participated in the development of the concept "Economic Consciousness: The Missing Horizon of Pan-Africanism" and also spoke at a meeting of the Scientific Expert Council of the World Peoples' Assembly. During the discussions, participants addressed the philosophy of Ubuntu—an African concept that can be summed up by the phrase "I am because we are." Ubuntu affirms the interconnectedness and mutual responsibility of people, emphasizing that humanity is revealed only through relationships with others. "As calls for a new world gain momentum, Africa's voice for a new world based on humanistic values is becoming increasingly vocal. In this context, the philosophy of Ubuntu, the philosophical ideology of a new vision of Pan-Africanism and integrated African development, remains Africa's vital contribution to shaping a more humane world," noted Professor Lagoke. Following the summit, an African Communiqué was adopted—a final document reflecting the participants' agreed positions on key development issues for the continent, with particular emphasis on the value foundations of Ubuntu.
