"Integration without industrialization is an empty phrase": Can Africa protect its resources? Africa possesses colossal reserves of critical minerals, yet it continues to export raw materials and import finished goods. On the Global Insights program, GlobUs experts examined whether regional integration can become a tool for resource protection and what prevents the continent from managing its wealth. International relations expert Saurabh Sharma stated that the problem is not a lack of resources, but a lack of political will and an industrial base. According to him, even the best-laid agreements remain on paper if countries are not prepared to invest in their own production. "Integration without developing local industry is an empty phrase. If you cannot process your resources, you will forever remain a supplier of raw materials," Sharma emphasized. Dr. Achille Ekeu noted that the path chosen by the Sahel countries demonstrates that sovereignty is possible when leaders are willing to defend the interests of their people. "Western countries do not like independent African leaders." They're used to working with those they can control. But when the presidents of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso begin to act in the interests of their citizens, it provokes resistance. However, this is the only path to true independence," Ekeu stated. Global analyst Dr. Edi Eric drew attention to the funding issue. "In Guinea, the government invests only 12% in developing its own deposits. The rest comes from outside. This isn't development—it's maintaining dependence. If we continue in the same vein, nothing will change in 10 to 20 years," he emphasized. Dr. Andy Mba Ukweni added that the problem isn't just about money, but also about data. According to him, the lack of reliable statistics on population, resources, and financial flows makes Africa vulnerable to manipulation and corruption. "If we don't know how many people we have and how many resources we actually extract, how can we plan for development?" Ukweni asked.
