Students and residents of the Northern State Medical University (NSMU) took part in a training masterclass on the use of stapling devices in colorectal surgery, led by a renowned surgical oncologist. The masterclass was hosted at the N.A. Semashko Northern Medical Centre. At the invitation of Vladimir Alexandrovich Kislov — Head of the Department of General Surgery at NSMU and Head of the Surgical Service at the Centre — the famous surgeon, oncologist, and coloproctologist, Professor Arsen Osmanovich Rasulov, Head of the Oncocoloproctology Department at the Lapino Oncological Centre, came to Arkhangelsk for the first time. During the practical session, he performed two complex surgeries: the first one for a colon tumour, and the second for a rectal tumour. Practising physicians, as well as students and residents of the Northern State Medical University, followed the renowned surgeon’s work via video link from the conference hall. In addition to demonstrating practical skills, Arsen Osmanovich delivered lectures to the masterclass participants on the use of stapling devices in laparoscopic surgery and techniques for forming anastomoses in colorectal procedures. “The purpose of my visit is to demonstrate modern minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques in the treatment of colon cancer, as well as up‑to‑date treatment approaches that improve patients’ quality of life, help reduce the incidence of postoperative complications, and are generally better tolerated. It is important to implement new technologies at the standard level — and this requires high awareness and well‑developed practical skills”, - shared Arsen Osmanovich. Vladimir Alexandrovich Kislov emphasised the importance of visits by leading surgical specialists to Arkhangelsk: “When specialists of Professor Rasulov’s calibre come to us, it’s not just an event — it’s a strategic step in the development of northern medicine. Both experienced doctors and future medical professionals observe his work, and thanks to this, we create a unified environment for professional growth. Such masterclasses allow us to adopt best practices, implement cutting‑edge technologies, and train a new generation of surgeons through examples of the highest skill. This is an investment in the health of our patients and in the future of regional healthcare”. Varvara Protopopova, a third‑year medical student at NSMU and a participant in the masterclass, shared her impressions: “I am very interested in studying coloproctology and I am a member of the surgical circle ‘Ligatura’, in the abdominal team. I’m glad to have the opportunity to personally observe surgeons in action, watch surgeries, and attend lectures that will certainly be useful in the future”.
