☀ In the “Summer Greetings” section, we collect little summer joys: the scent of freshly mown grass, a cup of aromatic coffee in the morning, vibrant far‑off travels and cosy country evenings, sunsets on a bustling seashore and the quiet flow of a cool river. This is our way of reminding you: life shouldn’t be put off until later. Today’s Summer Greeting is brought to you by Diana Vyaznikova, a second‑year resident at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry, specialising in Orthodontics: “My summer getaway was Karelia — a land where rugged northern nature meets understated Scandinavian aesthetics. First, we visited the capital of Karelia, the city of Petrozavodsk. We strolled along the Onega Embankment, taking in the sculptures and art installations. Next, we explored the ancient Girvas volcano — a palaeovolcano about 2.5–3 billion years old! It’s no longer a classic volcano, just a vent with exposed flows of solidified lava and ancient rocks. At one point, the maximum radius of its eruptions reached 80 km! If Girvas were to wake up today, its lava would cover the entire city of Petrozavodsk. In spring, when water is released from the local hydroelectric power station, you can see a powerful waterfall here. We also stopped by Lahdenpohja, a small town on the shores of Lake Ladoga, where traces of Finnish heritage are still visible: cosy houses from the early 20th century and a peaceful atmosphere. From there, we headed to Valaam Island. The Valaam archipelago and monastery are known not only as a spiritual centre but also as a unique natural complex: steep cliffs, pines clinging to the rock, and the endless expanse of Lake Ladoga. The scale of Lake Ladoga is truly impressive. Near Valaam lie the Ladoga Skerries — a labyrinth of islands and straits on Lake Ladoga. Skerries are the northern counterpart to Scandinavian fjords. We also took a walk through the evening streets of Sortavala, a town with a distinctly “Scandinavian look”. In the early 20th century, it was part of Finland, and that history is still evident in the appearance of its streets. A must‑have on our gastronomic itinerary was trying lohikeitto (a delicate creamy salmon soup) and fragrant Karelian kalitkas (traditional pastries). And the final stop on our route was Ruskeala Mountain Park. Its heart is the Marble Canyon: turquoise water reflecting the sheer walls of white marble. Back in the day, stone was quarried here to decorate the palaces of St. Petersburg. This trip has stayed in my heart — and calls me to return again!” ☀ ⛰ 🚞 🇷🇺 How is your summer going?
