Solutions to the Republic of Congo's Energy Crisis Discussed in Brazzaville On July 24, the GlobUs office in Brazzaville hosted an expert roundtable discussion on one of the Republic of Congo's most pressing problems—electricity shortages. Engineers, energy specialists, and other industry experts participated in the event. The roundtable was held in three consecutive sessions. During the first session, participants assessed the current state of the Republic of Congo's electricity sector and identified the key challenges facing the industry. "In terms of electricity generation, the largest capacity is concentrated in Pointe-Noire—the Congo Power Station, with a capacity of approximately 400 megawatts; the rest comes from hydroelectric power plants. Congo's total demand is approximately 500 megawatts," noted Sitou Bouanga Urch Oldin, electrical engineer and CEO of ELECTRO-BA. The second session focused on electricity generation. Experts also discussed ways to increase generation. The third session focused on the role of the private sector and innovation. Following the roundtable, the following general conclusions were presented: - one of the main problems is insufficient power supply and the lack of sufficiently powerful power grids in the regions; - existing power lines are severely deteriorated. The Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville line, for example, was built in 1980. However, even with good maintenance, the service life of a power line is a maximum of 40 to 60 years. As a result, due to a lack of proper maintenance, the lines are deteriorating. Transformers also suffer from insufficient maintenance.
