——— Sunday Postmodernism, issue No. 260 Bavarian artist and designer Heinz Landes (b. 1961) began his career as a metalworker and carpenter before studying at Pforzheim School of Design. In 1986, just one year after graduating, he presented what became one of the defining statements of the New German Design movement, an avant-garde current that challenged both the minimalism and functionalism of the Bauhaus and the immaculate, rational forms associated with Dieter Rams and companies such as Braun. The object in question was the Solid chair: a chair composed of ten rebars embedded in a block of concrete. This rebellious piece turns some of the most familiar themes of German modernism inside out. The cantilevered frame, traditionally the structure itself, becomes little more than an infill element. Bent chrome tubing gives way to raw reinforcing steel. The modernist principle of exposing construction is pushed to its logical extreme, leaving nothing concealed and nothing refined. Even the rules of reinforced-concrete construction are flagrantly violated. As the chair seems to suggest, when Bavarians decide to rebel, subtlety is rarely part of the plan.
