——— Interior of the Week How do you make a London executive happy? In the late 1960s, the Barbican had an answer: give him a Brutalist flat in the City. As the 1960s gave way to the 1970s, the Barbican was transforming the City of London: a vast residential complex of some 2,000 homes that would become one of the defining achievements of Brutalist architecture. The flats were aimed largely at middle- and upper-middle-class tenants, and the marketing made no secret of it. Promotional brochures promised, among other things, to make London’s top executives happy. (See the cover image.) But brochures were only part of the sales strategy. In 1967, the owners commissioned architect Miriam Howitt to furnish and decorate several show flats, with one rather challenging condition: each interior had to cost no more than £200. The first was Flat No. 21. To guide her design, Howitt imagined a very specific household living there: an ambitious young executive, his wife, and his wife’s younger sister. Perhaps it was the tiny budget - which forced Howitt to negotiate with manufacturers and shops for sponsorship and barter - or perhaps minimalism was simply part of the plan. Either way, the resulting interior was remarkably restrained. Still, a couple of details stand out. First, the three-color Hugh MacKay carpet running through the communal areas. And second, the bedroom imagined for the wife’s younger sister. Howitt deliberately filled it with a jumble of objects that looked as though they had been bought impulsively after payday. For the walls, she went one step further. Instead of wallpaper, Howitt used Scrolls 1 wrapping paper, featuring a pattern designed that same year by Nigel Quiney. How cool is that?
