——— However, it was the Fuga series that ultimately brought Sven Palmqvist his greatest recognition. Like Kraka and Ravenna before it, the collection emerged from the development of an entirely new glassmaking technique. Palmqvist had been contemplating a method for producing glass objects using a rotating mold as early as 1934, and by 1943 he was conducting his first experiments on a manually operated machine. That same year, he filed his first patent application for what he described as a “device for the manufacture of glassware”, essentially a hand-driven centrifuge. The invention, however, had a significant flaw. The mold lacked a retaining collar, meaning that "the molten glass could, at high speed, escape over the top of the mould, thus burning the pants of the operator". By the 1950s the process was refined, and in 1954 a new collection of bowls and dishes made from clear glass was introduced. Compared to the technical complexity of Kraka and Ravenna, these objects were almost austere in their simplicity. Their innovation lay not in color or surface decoration, but in the method of production itself: by then, the manual centrifuge had been replaced with an electrically powered one. The name of the collection - awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1957 - does not, despite appearances, refer to music. Rather, it alludes to the industrial process behind its creation. A mold is fixed to a centrifuge, molten glass is poured into it, and the machine is set spinning.
