——— Sunday Postmodernism, issue No. 263 In 2012, the future wife of your humble admin made several business trips to Denmark and noticed a curious feature of her Danish colleagues’ daily routine: for lunch, they seemed to eat nothing but smørrebrød - open-faced sandwiches of every imaginable variety, most often served on rye bread. Perhaps that is why Danish textile artist Anne Mette Larsen (b. 1961), who visited Russia in the same year, was so captivated by solyanka that she not only published the soup’s recipe on her website (annemettelarsen.dk ), but also designed and wove a textile pattern inspired by it, aptly titled “Soljanka.” According to the artist herself, her version contains rather too much lemon and not quite enough dill and olives. Russian soup was not Larsen’s only source of inspiration. She was equally fascinated by the architecture of St. Petersburg, particularly its five- and nine-story prefabricated apartment blocks, whose monotonous expanses provide a striking backdrop for seemingly random bursts of color. These observations of the city’s residential districts gave rise to works such as Korpus (“Building Block”) and Sne & mørke. The latter translates literally as “Snow and Darkness,” but it also evokes one of the fundamental ingredients of the Danish concept of hygge: the search for comfort and warmth during the long, cold, and dark winter months. Which is perhaps a reminder that hygge is not exclusively Danish. It can be found in Russia as well - emerging, unexpectedly, from a bowl of solyanka, the glow of apartment windows, or the colorful rhythms of a snow-covered housing estate.
