Continuing our discussion of the stools traditionally used by the Lobi people of West Africa, we would like to share an excerpt from a 1972 interview with Isamu Noguchi, in which the sculptor presents a similar stool from his own collection and reflects on the idea that furniture need not perform every function on behalf of its user. Discussing the Lobi stool, Noguchi explains that its genius lies in two deceptively simple observations. First, it accommodates people of every age, gender, and physique with equal ease. Second - and more importantly - it provides only one point of support. The other two points of stability already belong to the sitter. Instead of replacing the body's natural abilities, it collaborates with them. The object performs only the work that truly needs to be done, leaving the rest to its user, especially considering that "furniture is one of those thing we will eventually get rid of." Any thoughts?
