——— Let us continue our survey of lamps with perforated metal shades by sharing one of our favorite mid-century chandeliers - a piece that was sold nearly twenty years ago for $50,000. At the time, the auction house attributed the lamp, produced in the 1950s, to Mathieu Matégot. Because examples of this chandelier are exceedingly rare, confidence in that attribution has since diminished, and it is now generally described as possibly the work of the celebrated Hungarian-French designer. The asking prices, however, remain firmly in five-figure territory. Whoever its creator may have been, the design is a wonderfully witty deconstruction of the traffic light. Four perforated metal shades in different colors, made from a material closely associated with Matégot’s work, are threaded onto a slender horizontal axis, creating an object that recalls a kinetic sculpture, not unlike the mobiles of Alexander Calder. The effect is especially enchanting when illuminated. Light from the incandescent bulbs filters through the perforated “pods,” emerging softly tinted by their respective colors. The result is a chandelier that seems to hover somewhere between lighting fixture and sculpture, transforming a familiar urban signal into a playful and surprisingly elegant domestic object.
