——— At the height of the summer season, let us circle back to a theme we began exploring in the winter of 2025 and share one of the most memorable images of a bather in Soviet porcelain. The sculpture was created by Olga Bogdanova, an outstanding Soviet sculptor whose career was closely associated with Dulyovo Porcelain Factory. It was there, most likely during the 1950s or 1960s, that she modeled this sculpture. Over the years, it has been produced by various manufacturers under a variety of titles, including Seated Nude, Bather, By the River, In the Sunshine, and Nude with a Headscarf. Unlike the more restrained - but equally accurate - portrayals of young Soviet women, such as the celebrated Tenth-Grade Schoolgirls (1951), Bather captivates through the effortless naturalness of her pose. She appears completely at ease, absorbed not in action but in the quiet pleasure of a summer's day. That relaxed mood is heightened by what seems to be a deliberate dialogue with an ancient prototype: the famous Boy Removing a Thorn (Spinario). Where the classical figure is inward-looking and intensely focused on a small act of pain, Bogdanova's young woman embodies the opposite state of mind. Her body is similarly composed, yet instead of concentration she conveys serenity, warmth, and unhurried contemplation. (photos: dvaveka.ru, goskatalog.ru, FB Airi Allikvee)
