——— Rotation is one of the fundamental principles behind the shaping of plastic materials, whether clay on a potter’s wheel or molten glass at the end of a blowpipe. Yet some glass artists employed rotation as more than a means of forming an object, using it instead as an additional technique capable of producing entirely new visual effects. We have previously written about Sven Palmqvist’s centrifuged glass process, which gave rise to the celebrated Fuga collection. Today, we would like to turn to another well-known Swedish series, created by Bengt Edenfalk. Aptly called Spun, this line of vases, bowls, and even lamps was introduced by Skruf in 1960. The vessels themselves were handcrafted from colored glass and featured restrained, almost archetypal forms that look as if they emerged directly from a potter’s wheel. Their distinctive character, however, came from the decoration. A thread of molten glass was wound around the body of each vessel and fused to its surface. The resulting pieces resemble oversized spools or coils, their surfaces animated by a tactile spiral texture, which is unmistakably Nordic and equally pleasing to the eye and the hand.
