Друзья! По архитектурному сообществу прокатилась волна недовольства, достигшая и нас: осенью начнется демонтаж Шуховской башни, за которым последует реконструкция. По опубликованным сведениям, при реконструкции может быть заменено более 40% оригинальных элементов. По поводу объема и методики реконструкции мы ничего не можем сказать вследствие своей некомпетентности: нам неизвестно, каково состояние металла, которому исполнилось более ста лет, какие методы реставрации существуют на сегодняшний день, а также что происходит со статусом охраняемого объекта, когда меняется материал, из которого он изготовлен. Поэтому наша реакция на этот факт сугубо обывательская: если в течение века за башней следили плохо или не следили вовсе и коррозия достигла точки невозврата, то лучше, конечно, менять детали на новые, чем полностью лишиться уникального сооружения. Однако, помимо разговоров о воспроизведении башни из новых материалов, распространяется информация о том, что после реставрации планируется оборудовать башню лифтом и смотровыми площадками, а вот это уже тревожный сигнал. В 1922 г. Шухов мог предусмотреть и лифт, и площадку, как это сделал Густав Эйфель в 1889 г., но ни того, ни другого у башни не появилось. Сама по себе адаптация культурного наследия под запросы времени – процесс неизбежный, который зачастую приносит достойные плоды. Однако в этом случае очень бы хотелось избежать постмодернистского извращения сути этого выдающегося инженерного объекта. Коллеги сейчас собирают подписи о сохранении подлинности и целостности радиобашни – если вас тоже беспокоит судьба этого сооружения, побороться за его будущее можно здесь. ——— Dear Friends, A wave of discontent has been sweeping through the architectural community, and it has reached us as well: dismantling of the Shukhov Tower is due to begin this autumn, followed by reconstruction. According to published reports, more than 40% of its original elements may be replaced in the process. We are not really in a position to comment on this aspect of the project, simply because we lack the necessary expertise. We do not know the condition of metal that is more than a century old, what restoration techniques are available today, or what happens to the protected status of a heritage structure when a substantial part of its original material is replaced. So our reaction here is purely that of ordinary observers: if the tower has been poorly maintained - or not maintained at all - for a century and corrosion has reached the point of no return, then replacing its deteriorated elements is surely preferable to losing this unique structure altogether. However, alongside talk of reconstructing parts of the tower in new materials, reports are circulating that a lift and observation platforms are to be added after restoration. And that is where alarm bells start ringing. In 1922, Vladimir Shukhov could have incorporated both a lift and an observation deck, just as Gustave Eiffel had done in 1889. Yet neither appeared on his tower. And the tower went on to attract worldwide attention precisely because of the perfect integrity of its form and function. Adapting cultural heritage to contemporary needs is, in itself, an inevitable process, and one that can often produce worthwhile results. But in this particular case, we very much hope that the essence of this extraordinary piece of human engineering will not be distorted by a postmodernist makeover. Our colleagues are currently collecting signatures calling for the authenticity and integrity of the Shukhov radio tower to be preserved.
