——— British ceramicist Frederick Hurten Rhead was born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the industrial region known as the Potteries, into a family of china painters. In 1902, he crossed the Atlantic and settled in the United States, where he continued working with ceramics in all sorts of places and capacities - even teaching pottery at a tuberculosis sanatorium. By the beginning of the Great Depression, Rhead had become art director of the Homer Laughlin China Company, and he turned his experience and talent toward creating objects that might bring a little cheer into American homes. In 1936, at the height of the Depression, he designed Fiesta, a dinnerware collection comprising 42 different pieces. With its simple forms, practicality, and, above all, brilliant colors, Fiesta stood out dramatically against the more traditional decal-decorated tableware of the period - and immediately became a bestseller. The Fiesta collection remains in production to this day, nearly ninety years later, and continues to be one of America’s most popular lines of dinnerware.
